Links, Mirrors and Banners |
|
|
|
Will you link to my site / exchange banners?
I currently have no link section. So no banner exchanges are possible.
What banners should I use to link to MtG Lair?
Here's one to link to MtG Lair:

Please only use it to link to http://mtglair.de/index.html
Or use this one to link directly to the MtG Editor page:

Please only use it to link to http://mtglair.de/editor.html
Are there mirrors for this site / Do you want me to mirror it?
No need for the content. My provider offers unlimited bandwidth and can easily handle what traffic I have. But if you want to provide a mirror for the Editor downloads,
.
Can I offer MtG Editor for download elsewhere?
It's freeware, so you can do anything you like with it (except sell it). But I would urge you to link to MtG Lair instead. Firstly, MtG Editor is updated infrequently, so the version you offer may often not be current. And secondly, most users need the instructions given on my site.

The Windows Installer doesn't work/I don't have Windows.
If you have an older Windows version, try this 16 Bit Windows installer.
If not, use the zipped version. It works on any OS with Java installed. At least theoretically - from what I've heard, it doesn't work under Mac.
How do all the controls work?
Press F1 to open the help file from within the editor. All features are described there.
How do I insert Mana symbols?
Use tags. <G> stands for green mana, for example. The full list of tags can be found in the Help file.
How do I change the card layout?
In version 1.3, there's an Options dialog in the View menu. In there you can select a different layout.
In version 1.4, it's been moved to the bottom of the card properties window and works on a per-card level.
When will you update MtG Editor/add split card support?
Not at all. MtG Editor is no longer updated, I'm afraid. At the moment, I simply don't have the time...
Can I add my own mana symbols?
Not yet, unfortunately. A workaround is to replace the Y or Z mana symbol. To achieve this, find the folder for the layout you use (for modern layout it's the 8e folder) in the layout folder of your MtG Editor installation. It contains the files mana_Y.gif, mana_Y_head.gif, mana_Z.gif and mana_Z_head.gif. Replace these with the symbols you want to use and then use the letters Y and/or Z in your mana cost and the Tags <Y> and/or <Z> in the rules text.
What is Java? Why do I need it?
The Java Runtime Environment enables you to run programs written in Java. Bluntly spoken, Java is a program to run programs. That may sound a bit pointless, but it has specific andvantages. The most important one being that the program I write is platform-independant. MtG Editor can be run on Windows as well as on Unix or MacOS.
I realize that the JRE is a huge download and many users would prefer not having to go through it. I encourage you to do it anyway. In order to offer MtG Editor without requiring the JRE download, I would either have to rewrite it in another programming language or use commercial products to convert it, which is not an option, because MtG Editor, being freeware, doesn't generate any ROI.
MtG Editor doesn't start up (on Windows)
Make sure you proceed as follows when you install mtG Editor:
- First install the JRE version 1.4 or higher. You can find a link on the MtG Editor page.
- Now install MtG Editor 1.4, using the Installer version (the exe file). Uninstall earlier versions you may have installed. On most computers, this will work fine.
- If MtG Editor doesn't launch, edit the properties of the "MtG Editor" link in the program group in your Start menu by adding the absolute path to your javaw.exe to the "target" line. It should now look something like "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.4.2\bin\javaw.exe ..."
The important thing is that, if MtG Editor doesn't start up, reinstalling it usually won't help. Rather, reinstall your JRE and try again.
The thing is, Java needs to be able to launch the JRE (Java Runtime Environment), which can be done without qualifying its installation path in any recent versions if it's properly installed.
You can check this by just opening up a command window and typing "java -version" anywhere. If you get an output similar to the folloowing, your JRE is correctly installed and MtG Editor will launch:
C:\>java -version
java version "1.5.0-beta2"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-beta2-b51)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0-beta2-b51, mixed mode, sharing)
MtG Editor hangs on startup (splashscreen displays)
This error occurs when you installed MtG Editor 1.4 over an earlier version.
Uninstall MtG Editor (manually delete all files if Uninstall is not complete) and reinstall it.

What can I do here anyway?
Simple:
- Pick a riddle from the "Choose a riddle" area.
- Read the text thoroughly.
- Try to figure out the solutions.
- Click on the "Hint" button if available to get, well, a hint. The button will disappear if no more hints are available.
- Enter your solutions into the appropriate textfields. Never mind capital letters, empty spaces and hyphens.
- Click "Check" to find out if any of your answers are correct.
This dumb riddle is wrong, I'm sure.
If you're convinced I made a mistake with a riddle, please
and I'll change it.
I know a good one.
You know a good riddle? Great! Just
and I'll put it up.

Where has it gone?
It's gone to where old, useless programs go.
But why?
Because it was a piece of junk. Sorry, it really was. Use MtG Editor if you want to make cards.
Will it ever come back?
No. It's gone for good. But I've made an online version of MtG Editor which does the same, only a quadrillion times better. All I need is someone to host it.
But what if I really, really, really need it?
Then you're probably mistaken. Anyway, if you want it, I've still got it lying around here. Contact me and I'll mail it to you.

What about the puzzles? Are they copyrighted? May I use them elsewhere?
You may use single puzzles elsewhere, if you let the world know where you got it from and include the author of the puzzle. Just
if you want to publish a riddle elsewhere or if you have further questions.
What about the images used? Are they copyrighted? May I use them elsewhere?
The paintings are from current artists and either a company or an individual holds the copyright to each. I have not sought permission to use any of these, but most artists don't mind non-commersial use. If you are the artist of one of the Images or hold the copyright and would like to have it removed,
and I'll comply.

Browser Information |
|
|
|
What Browser can I use?
The normal pages (concerning MtG Editor and sets) can be viewed with any decent browser.
The Puzzlebox is more demanding. You will need a browser that supports JavaScript Version 1.5 in order to display the puzzles. The following browsers have been asserted to work properly with this site:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or higher
- Mozilla 1.0 or higher
- Netscape 6.2 or higher
- Opera 7 or higher (tested with Opera 7.23)
What Browser should I best use?
The Puzzlebox Riddles work equally well with all the browsers named above.
As for my personal taste: I mainly use Mozilla and Opera bacause they're faster and more stable than MSIE, they stick to defined standards and they offer tabbed browsing.
